2018 Building Active Communities Initiative BACI Action Institute May 8-10, 2018

May 8th -10th, Livingston, MT

The Montana Nutrition and Physical Activity (NAPA) Program’s Building Active Communities Initiative (BACI) is a project of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services in cooperation with Montana State University’s Office of Rural Health. With in-depth, interactive training, mentoring and ongoing technical assistance, NAPA’s Building Active Communities Initiative supports community-led approaches to develop active and healthy communities.

The three-day Action Institute brings together national, state & local experts with Montana cities & counties who are interested in making their communities safer and more accessible for walking and bicycling and increasing access to healthy local foods. Up to six community teams, representing multiple sectors, will be selected by an application process to attend the Institute. Each team will consist of five multi-sector community leaders (and two alternates) who agree to attend the full Action Institute.

The application for this Institute will be available on January 9th after an informational webinar held by the Montana Rural Health Initiative (RHI) at 2 pm MST on January 9th. For more information, please visit the BACI website: www.umt.edu/sell/cps/baci

Who is encouraged to apply for this sponsored training? (Travel, hotel, per diem and materials included.) All Montana cities with a population of 20,000 or below are eligible to apply, but priority may be given to communities who have never before attended a BACI Action Institute. We encourage applications from communities with a commitment to planning and community health. That commitment could be demonstrated through the adoption of, or the commitment to adopt, an appropriate planning document that supports the community’s vision and overarching goals. Examples of such planning documents include: e.g., growth policy, community health improvement plan, downtown master plan, transportation plan, economic development plan, Safe Routes to School plan.

The 2018 Action Institute will focus on the pertinent information that will help community teams improve:

  • Multi-sector collaboration
  • Communication and messaging skills
  • Community built environment assessment and action planning skills
  • Access to peer mentors and ongoing technical assistance such as webinars, BACI listserv and site visits
  • Access to electronic library of presentation materials, resources, and workbooks
